Who is National Australia Bank?

National Australia Bank was formed on 1 October 1981 through the merger of the National Bank of Australasia, established in Melbourne in 1858, and the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, founded in 1834. It is one of the big four alongside Commonwealth Bank, Westpac and ANZ, and describes itself as Australia's largest business bank, serving more than eight and a half million customers across Australia and New Zealand.

In June 2022 NAB completed a $1.2 billion acquisition of Citigroup's Australian consumer business, including its home lending portfolio, bringing those customers onto NAB's own book. NAB also owns UBank as a separate digital-only brand with its own pricing, and has committed to keep its rural and regional branches open until at least 31 July 2027, with regional branches making up 47% of its network, the highest share of any big-four bank.

Who suits a National Australia Bank home loan?

NAB tends to suit borrowers who want big-four scale backed by a strong regional and rural branch commitment, including anyone who held a Citi home loan and has since moved onto NAB's book. If a leaner digital lender suits you better, its own UBank brand is worth comparing too, and NAB's headline rates don't always lead the market, so check its comparison rate against the sharpest in the table above.
