Who is UBank?
Ubank is a digital-only banking division of National Australia Bank, launched on 1 October 2008 to serve branchless, self-directed customers under NAB's own banking licence. In 2021 NAB acquired the neobank 86 400 for $220 million, folding its technology and visual identity into Ubank through 2022 and retiring the 86 400 brand.
Ubank passed 1 million customers in November 2025, up from around 610,000 before the 86 400 merger, according to NAB's own reporting. Its home loan range waives lenders mortgage insurance for both owner-occupier and investor borrowers with a deposit as low as 10% on a purchase or 15% equity on a refinance, an exception to the usual 20% deposit LMI threshold most lenders apply.
Who suits a UBank home loan?
Ubank tends to suit borrowers comfortable managing everything through an app with no branch network, particularly younger buyers stretching for a smaller deposit who want to avoid lenders mortgage insurance. Its LMI waiver is worth comparing directly against the table above, especially for owner-occupier borrowers near the 90% LVR mark.
