Brokers Now Write a Record 81% of All New Home Loans
Brokers settled a record 81% of new home loans in the March 2026 quarter, as customer satisfaction data shows why Australians are choosing independent advice.
The numbers now speak for themselves. Mortgage brokers settled 81% of all new home loans written in Australia during the March 2026 quarter — the highest share on record, according to the Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia's latest Quarterly Market Share Report. Four out of every five home loans now begin not with a bank visit but with a broker appointment. MPA Australia reports that fresh customer satisfaction data from Loan Market illustrates why the channel continues to grow.
The brokerage announced that 75% of its businesses achieved a perfect Net Promoter Score in financial year 2026, with 93% recording an NPS of +95 or higher. The network's overall average held at +99, matching its prior year result and marking consecutive years at that level. By comparison, Roy Morgan data shows that even the highest-rated major bank — NAB — scored just 78.8% for customer satisfaction in May 2026. The gap between what broker clients report and what direct-channel customers report has rarely been wider.
Why Record Broker Market Share Is Happening Now
The 81% market share milestone is not a single event — it reflects several years of structural shift in how Australians access mortgage advice. Understanding those drivers helps borrowers decide whether the broker channel is the right fit for their situation.
**Access to a broader market.** A broker with a lender panel spanning more than 60 institutions — as Loan Market's network provides — can compare a far wider range of products in a single conversation than any individual borrower could reasonably research independently. That breadth is particularly valuable in a market where lender behaviour varies significantly: recent APRA data shows monthly mortgage book growth ranging widely across institutions, a spread that reflects meaningfully different pricing and policy positions. Access to that full picture is one of the clearest advantages brokers offer.
**Complexity has increased.** The current lending environment involves multiple intersecting pressures: an ongoing interest rate cycle, cost-of-living impacts on borrowing capacity assessments, recent federal budget changes affecting investors and property markets, and tightening credit criteria at some institutions. Navigating those simultaneously without professional guidance carries real risk — and is a meaningful driver of borrowers choosing advice-led channels over direct application.
**Human expertise that technology augments rather than replaces.** Loan Market's chief marketing officer Angela Tracey described the dynamic clearly: "AI might help a borrower find us, but our brokers are the ones who build the relationship and guide them through finding the right home loan." The brokerage points to technology that handles administrative workload so brokers can focus on the aspects of the relationship — financial education, scenario planning, clear communication — that produce the satisfaction scores the data shows. "We don't just find finance solutions that meet our clients' best interests; we educate them, improve financial literacy, and remove stress through clear, regular communication," Tracey said.
Loan Market was founded in 1994 by Sam White and is part of the White Family Group. It now supports around 1,000 brokers and advisers across Australia and New Zealand, with access to more than 60 lenders on its panel, helping more than 35,000 Australians and New Zealanders secure finance each year.
What Record Broker Share Means for Home Loan Borrowers
The concentration of lending through the broker channel has a market-wide effect on competition: when lenders know the majority of new business is broker-originated, they are incentivised to keep their products sharp and their policies accessible to retain a place on broker panels. That competitive dynamic benefits all borrowers, not just those who engage a broker directly.
For first-home buyers, the broker channel provides particular value at the point where navigating multiple government schemes, lenders' deposit policies, and LMI thresholds is most daunting. First-home buyer home loan options and scheme eligibility are easier to assess when someone who has guided hundreds of clients through the same process is running the numbers alongside you. You can also use a LMI calculator upfront to understand whether lenders mortgage insurance is likely to apply at your deposit level, and to factor that cost into your property budget.
For borrowers considering refinancing, the record satisfaction scores suggest that broker clients who regularly engage with their adviser tend to stay better informed about whether their loan remains competitive. If it has been more than 12 months since you reviewed your rate, a refinance savings estimate is a useful starting point — it gives you a realistic figure to work with before you commit the time to a full application.
The data tells a consistent story: more Australians are choosing brokers, and those who do are reporting significantly higher satisfaction than those who deal with lenders directly. In a lending environment that rewards informed, relationship-led advice, exploring home loans via a broker comparison is increasingly where borrowers are starting their search.
The satisfaction data referenced in this article is drawn from Loan Market's FY26 results, as reported by MPA Australia.
